Description: Chair, Department of Neurosurgery The School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (SMBS) at The State University of New York at Buffalo (University at Buffalo UB), invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery. The Chair will be expected to provide the clinical, educational and scientific vision to maintain and advance the Department’s reputation for excellence. Appropriate resources, in the form of new Assistant to Full Professor faculty lines and start-up packages, are available to implement this growth. DEPARTMENT OF NEUROSURGERY: Currently, there are 12 faculty members, including 3 faculty with basic research careers, in the Department. The Department ( is responsible for educating students in the SMBS, and for training of its own residents and fellows. The Department plays a major role in the newly opened Gates Vascular Institute on the growing downtown Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. Under the University at Buffalo UB2020 strategic plan, the SMBS will relocate in Fall 2016 to a new $375M Medical School Building on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus ( in downtown Buffalo where it will join the newly opened $118M Clinical Translational Research Center. The new Children’s Hospital of Buffalo will also be relocating to the downtown campus in 2015. UB is the SUNY system’s comprehensive campus health science schools include the Schools of Dental Medicine, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Public Health and Health Professions, and Nursing in addition to Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITIES: Modernized and well-designed clinical and laboratory space, as well as cutting edge research cores are available on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and the UB South Campus. Many South Campus facilities will be moved downtown as part of the UB2020 plan. Diverse opportunities for collaborations exist at nearby Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, the New York Center of Excellence for Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, and the Research Institute on Addictions.

Strong leadership and administrative skills are essential attributes. Beyond maintaining a strong clinical program, responsibilities of the Chair include administration of the Department and its training programs, as well as defining its mission and overall direction.
